Image
How teaching and learning remain open in the light of COVID 19 Tutors of colleges of education in collaboration with T-TEL are adopting radical approaches to ensure the continuity of teaching and learning in Ghanaian schools. Ghana’s teacher education system and responding to COVID 19. the past few years have seen momentous and positive changes within Ghana’s Teacher Education system as we have embarked upon the most ambitious and comprehensive set of reforms to initial teacher education in our nation’s history. These reforms are driven by a desire to ensure that we produce teachers who can inspire learners and encourage critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity rather than on factual recall to pass written examinations. Stakeholders’ consensus was developed through dialogue and consultation with key actors and agencies across the educational system which led to the production of the National Teacher’s Standard (NTS). These standards set out a common expectation of Ghanaia...

UNCIF to support government

Image
UNICEF-Ghana is working to support the government. Many children across the world are out of school because of the COVID’19 but they are being supported to continue learning even though it comes with challenges, as it stands now, these are not normal times and therefore, alternate actions need to be taken. A good education is one of the most valuable resources we (teachers) can provide for children to become effective agents of change in this social crisis. Coronavirus could help redefine our educational system as it led us (students and teachers) into temporary ‘halt’ situation. However, COVID 19 has become a catalyst for educational institutions to look for more innovative solutions in a relative short period of time. UNICEF-Ghana and the Department for International Development (DFID) are working to support government of Ghana to coordinate continuous learning and online education for students who are out of school due to coronavirus pandemic. The rapid spread of the Coronavirus...

These skills will remain a priority for all students and stakeholders. In Kenya this is what is happing at the moment. “In the interest of the safety of the school children, the government has decided to extend closure of schools by a month,” Kenyan Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha said on Sunday. @EduMinKenya @eduint #CSMagoha #covid19kenya🇰🇪

Schools’ readiness for digital learning

Image
Digital learning amidst of COVID 19, it's a two way affair, the pros and the cons  However-if the digital gap in education were to increase while schools are closed, learning inequality and  learning poverty  would also inevitably increase. Learning continuity would then be ensured for some but denied to others.   This would allow all students to access online learning materials and digital platforms with educational content. However, even in rich countries where Internet connectivity is all but universal and there is little gap in access, the COVID-19 crisis has illuminated two more dimensions to the digital gap. The second dimension is the  digital use gap : without direction, engagement with online content is less sophisticated and less learning-oriented for students from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds. The third dimension is the  school digital gap : the capacities and capabilities of each school to provide individualized, or suitably le...

Mathematics Teacher overlooks mockery...

Image
Physically-challenged math teacher overlooks mockery from students and eventually made them fall in love with him and math Michael Thompson, a physically-challenged man, said that his student never liked him as they mocked him because he uses crutches for movement. He added that when he heard them say “how can this guy with crutches be our mathematics teacher”, it hurt him so badly. The mockery continued as he was made fun of whenever he struggled to write the date at the top end of the blackboard because of his height. His student nicknamed him Mr Crutches. He then decided to change his perspective and control his emotions since he could not change them. Michael said he started smiling whenever they joked about his physical appearance. He added that as time went on, they did not only love him but fell in love with mathematics. He, therefore, advised people to always use their energy for the right things and not waste it on situations they cannot control This is the way t...

There's no fixed date for re-opening of schools

Image
The Director-General of the GES, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, told the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday, that with the current situation where nobody was certain when the COVID-19 scourge would end, there was no way the GES could announce a date for the reopening of schools. He said once the coronavirus situation was addressed and it was safe to go to school, the service would come out with an official date as to when schools would reopen. Prof. Opoku-Amankwa, therefore, asked the public to disregard any information and rumours that schools would reopen in September, this year. According to the GES, the video was an old one picked from a press conference he held last year announcing the reopening of school for that year. GET CORONAVIRUS UPDATES HERE “This is an old video that somebody has picked and is circulating on social media that we are reopening school in September,” he stated. "When we have seen a decline with the Coronavirus and it's safe for us to go to ...
